Keeping the Promise: It is hard to believe that there is even a need for an organization to ensure that our nation keeps its pledge to care for those who served our country. Unfortunately, since the Vietnam War, our country has fallen short in fulfilling that promise, creating numerous obstacles that disabled veterans, servicemembers, and their families must overcome to receive the benefits they have earned and deserve.
The National Veterans Legal Services Program (NVLSP) was created to ensure that our nation lives up to its promise to take care of those who suffer injuries resulting from their brave service to our country. Since November 1981, NVLSP has grown from a single-issue project into a high-impact, independent, nonprofit national veterans service organization with four core programs—Individual Representation, Class Actions, Training and Publications, and its pro bono program, Lawyers Serving Warriors®—fighting for justice on behalf of those who served our nation.
NVLSP’s Core Programs
Class Actions
NVLSP brings class actions to remove systemic barriers to justice for hundreds of thousands of veterans and their survivors. In Nehmer v. U.S. Veterans Administration, we forced the VA to pay over $4.6 billion to veterans harmed by Agent Orange exposure.
Individual Representation
NVLSP represents veterans wrongfully denied benefits before the U.S. Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims (CAVC). Over 90% of cases we appeal each year result in a reversal or correction of legal errors.
Training and Publications
NVLSP equips attorneys and advocates to help veterans secure their benefits through in-person and webinar trainings. Our definitive treatise, the Veterans Benefits Manual, remains a key resource in the field.
Pro Bono Program
NVLSP’s Lawyers Serving Warriors program offers free legal assistance to veterans and active duty personnel through a national network of volunteer attorneys. The program provides representation before discharge review agencies, VA regional offices, and the courts that review their decisions.
