May 27 Event Organized by the National Veterans Legal Services Program Draws Attention to Impact of More Than a Decade of War in Iraq and Afghanistan, Changing Roles of Women

WASHINGTON – Four notable women authors who have written about the Global War on Terror in Iraq and Afghanistan and its impact on women serving in the military and on the home front, will participate in a panel discussion organized by the National Veterans Legal Services Program (NVLSP) and moderated by Judy Woodruff. The event is open to press coverage.

Date/Time: Wednesday, May 27, 2015, 11:00am-12:30pm. Book sales will begin at 10:00am. Authors will be available for book signing from 10am-11am, and from 12:30pm-1:00pm.

  • Gayle Tzemach Lemmon - author of the New York Times bestseller Ashley's War: The Untold Story of a Team of Women Soldiers on the Special Ops Battlefield (April 2015) and The Dressmaker of Khair Khana: Five Sisters, One Remarkable Family, and the Woman Who Risked Everything to Keep Them Safe (2011).
     
  • Kayla Williams - an Army veteran who served with the 101st Airborne and spouse of a seriously injured service member, author of Plenty of Time When We Get Home: Love and Recovery in the Aftermath of War (2014) and Love My Rifle More Than You: Young and Female in the U.S. Army (2006).
     
  • Tanya Biank - military spouse and author of UNDAUNTED: The Real Story of America's Service Women in America's Military (2014) and Under the Sabers: the Unwritten Code of Army Wives (2006). Her 2006 book is the basis for the hit LIFETIME television series, Army Wives.
     
  • Kirsten Holmstedt - author of Girls Come Marching Home: The Stories of Women Warriors Returning From the War in Iraq (2009, 2011), Band of Sisters: American Women at War in Iraq (2007).

Moderator: Judy Woodruff, co-anchor and managing editor of PBS Newshour

About the Event:
Moderated by renowned journalist, Judy Woodruff, this panel discussion features four notable women authors who have written about women's experiences during the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. The authors will discuss service in the military and on the home front by women, common themes in the experiences of women during these wars, and their varying perspectives. Attendees will be asked to support the work of NVLSP in advocating for veterans to receive disability benefits. Book sales will begin at 10:00am for the most recent titles by each author and sales will be provided by Politics and Prose.
