FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – June 5, 2013

WASHINGTON – They’re accustomed to tackling legal challenges when fighting to help our nation’s veterans, but now the National Veterans Legal Services Program (NVLSP) is taking on a new challenge – raising funds competitively for five weeks through the crowdsourcing Veterans Charity Challenge.

Organized by CraigConnects and the Stewart J. Rahr Foundation, the Veterans Charity Challenge features NVLSP among a group of charities assisting veterans and their families and invites donors to show their support and give to help our nation’s veterans and their families. The popular Crowdrise platform is used for the five-week campaign that runs from May 23 to July 3, 2013 at noon Eastern Time.

Donors can give anonymously, list their names, post a tribute or give in memory of someone. Donors can give easily and securely online at: http://www.crowdrise.com/LawyersServingWarriors/fundraiser/nationalveteranslega

Organizers from NVLSP hope to out-raise other charities and qualify for an additional $35,000 donation offered by CraigConnects and the Stewart J. Rahr Foundation. NVLSP is also seeking to connect with new supporters who care about helping our veterans, active-duty military and their families.

NVLSP plans to use the funds raised through the Veterans Charity Challenge for its Lawyers Serving Warriors® program. Since 2007, the program has provided pro-bono legal representation on claims for federal disability benefits to veterans from all service eras.  In the last year alone, the program has screened and placed cases for more than 500 veterans with a volunteer attorney from NVLSP’s national network of more than 90 large private law firms and corporate legal departments.

NVLSP represents and litigates for veterans and their families before the VA, military discharge review agencies, and federal courts. Of the hundreds of cases that NVLSP appeals annually to the U.S. Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims, 90% obtain a reversal of previously denied claims or are sent back to correct errors and receive a new benefits decision.

NVLSP has trained thousands of lawyers and non-lawyer advocates representing veterans before the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and military discharge review agencies, arming them with knowledge of veterans’ law and winning techniques and legal arguments. NVLSP annually publishes the nation’s definitive guide on veterans’ benefits and other materials to help advocates and attorneys assist veterans. NVLSP is an independent, nonprofit veterans’ service organization that has served active duty military personnel and veterans since 1980. For more information about NVLSP, go to www.nvlsp.org.
