-Sets Record in Fundraising and Attendance-
The National Veterans Legal Services Program (NVLSP) raised over $600,000 at its Tenth Annual Benefit Reception on November 8. Themed “Honoring Women Veterans – Leading from the Front,” the annual benefit raised resources that will enable NVLSP’s team of legal experts to assist our nation’s veterans and service members. The reception and one-hour program provided an opportunity to honor those who have made significant contributions to improving the lives of our veterans and their families. [more]

Williams as master of ceremonies of its Tenth Annual Benefit Reception, “Honoring Women Veterans - Leading from The Front,” on November 8 at The Mayflower Hotel. Latest salvo is a class action, in ongoing 8-year battle to get VA to comply with the law
The National Veterans Legal Services Program (NVLSP) filed a class action lawsuit today in the U.S. Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims (CAVC) against the Secretary of Veterans Affairs, Robert Wilkie. The suit, filed with the pro-bono assistance of Sidley Austin LLP, is the latest chapter in an 8-year saga to get the VA to honor its obligations to reimburse veterans for emergency medical expenses incurred at non-VA facilities. Achieves New High in Participation
National Veterans Legal Services Program’s (NVLSP) Row for Warriors 2018, a competitive Dragon Boat rowing event, achieved a new high in participation with approximately 130 volunteers. “We are delighted with the enthusiasm and generosity that our supporters demonstrated this year, “said Bart Stichman, executive director of NVLSP. “It is gratifying to see Row for Warriors grow every year. Expert Attorneys are Actively Preparing Additional Advice to Help Veterans Claim Their Refunds
More than 130,000 combat-injured veterans had their lump sum severance pay improperly taxed by the government due to a computer glitch when they left the military from 1991-2016. On July 9, 2018, the Department of Defense began mailing letters to notify affected veterans, and on July 11, 2018, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) issued guidance to assist veterans. NVLSP will be issuing advice in a few weeks to help veterans. [more]

The newsletter expresses NVLSP’s sincere appreciation for the legal work provided by attorneys nationwide to enable service members and veterans to obtain the benefits they deserve. This initial edition will highlight some of the victories obtained in 2017. NVLSP and Its Private Law Firm Partner Persuade the Federal Circuit to Overturn 19-Year Precedent
In a sweeping legal victory for veterans, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit overturned a 19-year lower court precedent which prohibited the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) from awarding disability benefits to a veteran for disabling pain if it was not linked to a medical diagnosis. “What this ruling means is that if a physician cannot diagnose the cause of the pain the veteran is experiencing, but the pain is related to an event, injury, or disease that occurred during the veteran’s military service, the veteran should now win disability benefits,” said Bart Stichman, executive director and co-founder of NVLSP and one of the attorneys who represented the veteran in the case.
