Job Title: Legal Assistant
Position Type: Full-time
General Summary: The National Veterans Legal Services Program (NVLSP) is a high-impact national nonprofit veterans service organization based in Arlington, Virginia. Established in 1981, NVLSP’s mission is to ensure that the government delivers to our nation’s veterans and active duty personnel the benefits to which they are entitled due to the disabilities resulting from their military service.
One of the ways that NVLSP accomplishes its mission is by training advocates in veterans law so that they can efficiently help veterans secure benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs. NVLSP presents a webinar series that provides training on 10 different topics in veterans law every year. NVLSP also offers an online Basic Training Course on Veterans Benefits, provides in-person training across the country, and mentors attorneys who provide pro bono representation before the U.S. Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims.
Another way that NVLSP accomplishes its mission is through its pro bono program, Lawyers Serving Warriors® (“LSW”). LSW provides free legal representation, through a nationwide pro bono network of private law firms and corporate legal departments, to disabled active duty personnel and veterans and their families. LSW assists over 400 disabled veterans per year through its pro bono network. The majority of the clients served through LSW have post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), traumatic brain injuries (TBI), or other mental health conditions that are related to military service.
The role of the Legal Assistant is to provide support to both NVLSP’s training department (~22.5 hours per week) and the Lawyers Serving Warriors® program (~15 hours per week). The position is hybrid in-person/remote. The employee is expected to be present in NVLSP’s Arlington (Rosslyn) office 3 days per week, with the option to work remotely 2 days per week. The successful candidate will have exceptional organization skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage and prioritize multiple deadline-driven tasks while maintaining a professional and pleasant demeanor. The candidate must also have excellent information technology, communication, and customer service skills.
Training Department Responsibilities
The legal assistant is primarily responsible for NVLSP’s webinar program, which presents 30-35 webinars per year, to include logistics, marketing, moderation, customer service, and technological matters (but not content or presentation of the webinars). The individual must develop expertise with NVLSP’s webinar platform, serve as a liaison with partner organizations that view webinars, prepare invoices, apply for CLE credit for webinars, edit and post recordings of webinars on NVLSP’s website, and handle emails and phone calls from customers. The individual is also responsible for customer service related to NVLSP’s Online Basic Training Course, assistance with preparation for in-person trainings, maintaining and updating NVLSP’s products website, and adding information about certain cases to a case management system.
